Key rules governing professional and home poker tournaments, based on WSOP and EPT standards.
Each player is dealt 2 private cards (hole cards). 5 community cards are revealed: Flop (3), Turn (1), River (1). The best 5-card combination wins.
The player left of the dealer posts the Small Blind; the next posts the Big Blind (2× SB). Blinds rise each level. Post-flop, action starts left of the dealer button.
From a set level, the Big Blind player also posts an ante equal to 1 BB. This replaces traditional antes posted by every player, keeping the game faster and the pots bigger.
Any raise must equal the previous raise amount. Example: BB = 200, player A raises to 600 (+400) — minimum re-raise is 1,000 (+400). In no-limit, a player may always go all-in.
Any player may go all-in for any amount, even less than the current bet. A side pot is created for the excess. The all-in player only contests the main pot they are eligible for.
After the final betting round, the best hand wins. Cards speak for themselves — the dealer rules regardless of verbal claims. Mucking a winning hand forfeits the pot.
At each break, low-denomination chips are removed via a chip race. Each player receives one card per remaining chip — highest card wins any extra chip. Ties broken by suit (♠ > ♥ > ♦ > ♣).
Most tournaments allow new entries and re-entries up to a set level (typically levels 6–10 or a fixed time limit). After late reg closes, the field is locked and no new players may enter.
As players are eliminated, tournament staff move players to keep tables balanced (maximum 1-player difference). A player may be moved mid-break. The button is adjusted accordingly.
Each player has a set time to act. EPT uses a 30-second shot clock with time-bank extensions. WSOP uses a floor-called clock on request. Exceeding the time = hand declared dead.
